Fishing with Heroes
Honoring Combat – Injured Veterans is our Passion
Melvin ‘Mel’ Kramer, pictured here, passed away Oct. 2017. Mel twice had taken part in the Fishing With Heroes weekend and will be well remembered by all. Loyal, kind and funny are the best adjectives to describe him. He kept everyone in stitches laughing at his stories. He once ‘threatened’ to get out of his wheelchair and throw a fellow 1/3 his age overboard for taking a fish out of turn ahead of him. We miss you Mel.
Fishing With Heroes is no longer running the full weekend events. The planning and work had gotten to be more than we could handle. However, we will continue to operate the no-cost-to-you smaller 2-4-man groups with meals and overnight lodging included until we exhaust the finances for the program. If you are a U.S. combat-injured Vet, a WW II, or Korean War Vet you qualify for the program. (VA documented combat PTSD also qualifies.) We will make your caregiver part of your trip if one is needed.
Fishing With Heroes— fishing and so much more!
Since 2010, Cast Away Charters has enlisted the help of numerous volunteers and donors to provide this all-expense paid weekend for injured soldiers as a way to provide an enjoyable experience, mixing fishing with fellowship, in recognition of their service to their country.
For a well written, detailed account of the weekend’s activities and a list of the sponsors and volunteers, click on the links below. These accounts were written by outdoor writer Dave Barus (pen name Forrest Fisher) who also served as a volunteer during these events.
